A bizarre email uncovered through a Freedom of Information Act request by FOIAball is raising eyebrows around the Ole Miss football program. Some are speculating that coach Lane Kiffin — or someone in his inner circle — may have taken an unusual route to defend his position before leaving for LSU.

The email was sent to Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter during a tense period when Kiffin’s availability for postseason coaching duties was in question. While most correspondence reportedly supported administrative caution, one message stood out for both its tone and its authenticity.

“Let’s finish what we started. Banning Lane Kiffin from coaching the College Football Playoff is a disgrace,” the email read in part via SportsTalk Mississippi. The person urged Carter to reverse course while threatening to cut ties with the university.

The message claimed to come from a concerned Ole Miss supporter with family ties to the school. However, several details raised skepticism. The wording, phrasing and even basic fan terminology, including referring to supporters as “fans” instead of the more basic “Rebels” stood out as inauthentic.

Could this have come from Kiffin himself or a member of his family? There is no evidence directly linking Kiffin to the email, and the coach has not publicly addressed the situation. But the details are interesting and slide past the dynamics of major college football programs in the modern era.

Kiffin has never shied away from engaging publicly. Whether this email was a case of overzealous fandom or something closer to home, it has added another layer to an already eventful chapter in Oxford.
