Ohio State makes the cut for two top 2027 targets

Spring Break quickly coming for Ohio State’s student-athletes, the Buckeyes are getting in the last few spring football practices before resuming following the break and wasting no time preparing for their 2026 campaign. Talent all over the field and recruiting opportunities each session, Ohio State’s coaching staff is making the most of these few weeks and using it to their benefit both on and off the field.

Good news once again on Wednesday for Ohio State’s chances of landing top targets in the future cycles, the momentum is there and should pay off in major ways.

Four-star RB closer to decision after releasing top six schools

Yes to land a commitment at the running back position in the 2027 recruiting class, Ohio State and Carlos Locklyn have been pushing hard to land their top priorities. Multiple names in the mix, the favorite has long been David Gabriel Georges, and the Buckeyes are in good position.

Like any year, the smartest coaching staffs have multiple top options as backup plans. The same method for Locklyn in 2027, so far Ohio State is appealing to several running backs.

The latest good news on the recruiting front, Wednesday’s update regarding Georgia native, Nigel Newkirk kept the Buckeyes in good graces. The No. 1954 player nationally and 11th best at the position per the 247Sports Composite grades, Newkirk has 30-plus offers, but has trimmed his list to just six final programs he will be deciding from. Including Ohio State, Nigel also named Alabama, LSU, Miami, Michigan, and USC as his finalists.

No shortage of national powerhouses on his list, the Buckeyes will have some stuff competition in this battle, but clearly have done enough so far. Alabama the rumored leader here, the next step in this recruitment is to ensure Nigel is on campus to get a closer look at all Ohio State has to offer.

Five-star DB still liking what he sees in the Buckeyes

A position group that has seen some success already in terms of commitments in the 2027 class, Ohio State’s defensive secondary is off to a strong start. Needing more cornerbacks specifically though, the Buckeyes are in pursuit of several top candidates and that includes five-star Texas native, John Meredith III.

A 6-foot-2, 175 pound athlete, Meredith is the No. two player nationally and the top cornerback in the country per the 247Sports Composite grades. Offers from every major school in the college landscape, John is the best cornerback in the class for a reason and so far Ohio State has done enough to catch his attention.

Always a strong presence in Texas, the Buckeyes continue to go back to the well and landing a five-star talent of his caliber would do nothing but keep their class atop of the rankings.

Releasing a top six schools this week as well, Ohio State joined the likes of Alabama, Miami, Notre Dame, Texas, and Texas A&M. Right away, seeing two in-state schools pushing for his pledge is no surprise, but this far into his recruitment any of the finalists have a real shot.

Quick Hits

New names still being added to the guest list for this spring and summer the Buckeyes learned on Wednesday they will play host to 6-foot-2, 175 pound athlete, Kamieon Compton-Nero on June 11 for an unofficial visit.

The No. 88 player nationally and seventh best player at his position for the 2028 class per the 247Sports Composite grades, Ohio State is in the mix early on this Oklahoma native and while an offer has yet to be dished out from the Buckeyes, you can almost certainly bet that his summer visit will be the time it comes.
