Texas A&M remains the No. 3-ranked team in the CFP rankings after the second addition of the CFP rankings was released on Tuesday night, as the Aggies will enter Week 11 9-0 and 6-0 in the SEC, set to host South Carolina (3-6, 1-6 SEC) on Saturday afternoon. While this isn’t shocking, many believe that the Aggies have accomplished more this season in what is still considered the toughest conference in the country.
One of the primary reasons Texas A&M is still unscathed has been the elite play of redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed, who has thrown for 2,193 yards and 19 touchdowns, combined with 368 rushing yards and six scores, thanks to transfer wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, and a balanced rushing attack.
Reed’s ascendance as one of Texas A&M’s most influential leaders has been a fun journey to cover, from his many ups and downs during the 2024 season to his vast improvement in the offseason, which has resulted in his current status as one of college football’s most respected stars.
Ahead of facing the Gamecocks, who defeated Texas A&M last season 44-20, after entering halftime tied 20-20, Reed and most of the roster that experienced this embarrassing defeat aren’t just looking to remain undefeated during the first home game in over a month. Still, revenge is on their mind after South Carolina essentially dismantled the Aggies’ season, losing three out of four games after the fact.
“Obviously you can’t look back at last year and try to bring that type of energy into it, but it is personal,” Reed said. “That’s one of the teams that kind of got us out of getting into the playoffs last year and took us out of the SEC Championship conversation so it’s just the 1-0 mentality. We have South Carolina and that’s what our focus is on. They’re in our way just like every other team so we’re just going to go handle business this weekend.”
This is just another example of Reed’s leadership, recognizing that, despite South Carolina’s struggles this season, starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers will challenge the Aggie defense with his size and dual-threat running ability. At the same time, sophomore edge rusher Dylan Stewart will be another challenge for A&M’s veteran offensive line.
