New Michigan football head coach Kyle Whittingham has been on the job for nearly three months, but as it pertains to recruiting, most of his work thus far has either been acquiring players through the transfer portal or retaining the current roster.

But now, Whittingham has his first commit in the forthcoming class — and it’s a big one.

Hailing from Chicago (Ill.) Morgan Park, 2027 four-star safety Darrell Mattison has been trending to the maize and blue the past few days. And on Tuesday evening, he officially pulled the trigger, committing to the Wolverines.

Mattison chose Michigan football over offers from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Penn State, and others. He’s listed at 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, and is rated most highly on 247Sports, where he’s a four-star recruit, at No. 243 overall. He’s also listed as the 23rd-best safety.

He is the fourth commit in the class, joining edge rusher Recarder Kitchen, and offensive linemen Tristan Dare and Louis Esposito.
