Notre Dame football is fresh off a massive recruiting weekend.Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish were hosts for some of their top overall recruiting targets in both the 2027 and 2028 classes. The early feedback is that those couple of days could provide a huge payback starting in the pretty near future.

Heading into the visit, it was uncertain where things stood with 2027 four-star Argyle (Texas) High School wide receiver Julian Caldwell. The Texas native has been on the Irish radar for quite some time, so it was no secret that the Notre Dame staff has had very real interest. How much that interest is reciprocated would depend how this visit went, among other things.

It appears that a lot of questions were answered during the visit. Following the trip, Steve Wiltfong from the Rivals network recapped the weekend and gave an update on the overall recruitment. Caldwell did not shy away from his opinion on Freeman and Co. and where they stand.

“Honestly, after this visit, they’ve jumped up a lot on my list and definitely have a shot of being my school of choice,” Caldwell told Wiltfong.

Once considered a strong Oregon lean, it appears that Notre Dame has cut the gap and become a huge factor in this recruitment. The next couple of months will end up determine just how realistic this fit could become for wide receivers coach Mike Brown. For now, this was a tremendous step with Caldwell, and the Irish have clearly put themselves in the game.

Julian Caldwell’s recruiting background

Caldwell is considered to be a consensus four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Caldwell currently rates as the No. 89 overall player, the No. 15 wide receiver, and the No. 11 player from the state of Texas for the 2027 class. The Texas native is extremely high on Caldwell right now, sitting as the No. 81 player in the country.

Like the rankings, Caldwell also boasts an extremely impressive offer list. Some of his other top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Oklahoma, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Penn State, Florida, Miami, Florida State, USC, Auburn, Nebraska, Utah, Washington, Missouri, Kentucky, Kansas State, Arizona State, Colorado, SMU, BYU, Illinois, Baylor, Pitt, Syracuse, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Kansas, and Duke, among many others.

The 6-0, 185-pound wideout was tremendous for Argyle as a junior this past season. In 14 games, Caldwell managed to haul in 94 receptions for 1,737 yards and 20 touchdowns, averaging a stellar 18.5 yards per reception. His combination of quickness and explosiveness offers a ton of upside for a college offense.
