There is considerable hype building for Notre Dame football’s second-year starting quarterback CJ Carr, and on Wednesday quarterback coach Gino Guidugli added to that.

When asked about Carr, the quarterback coach went on to say “I think CJ is going to have a chance to be one of the best quarterbacks ever to come through the University of Notre Dame.” The key here is chance, as Guidugli expanded on the areas he needs to improve: leadership.

The expectation is that Carr is will named a captain in the fall, and its hard to disagree with that sentiment. It’s hard for any freshman to get that honor, but now that he has a big-time season under his belt, his teammates know that he’s one of the leaders for Notre Dame.

What was also interesting was that Guidugli said that Carr’s play doesn’t have to be that much better for the Irish to accomplish their ultimate goal, winning a College Football Playoff championship. This past season, he threw for 2,741-yards with 24 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions. Carr completed his passes at an extremely-high rate of 66.6%, but there is plenty of room to grow.

His second season starting should be another jump, with passing for over 3,000-yards and 30 touchdowns wouldn’t seem like too lofty goals. Carr is already considered one of the top 2027 NFL draft prospects, but that isn’t on his mind at the moment. He was asked about his draft stock today, and quickly turned the attention to the daily focus of improving, instead of what his future holds.

Maturity is the only way to describe that, as Carr is on-track to have a massive 2026.
