Clemson Offense SWOT: Strengths & Threats

They say college football has become a big business and its true. One well-known business technique is called a SWOT analysis. Inspired by the Talkin’ Yanks podcast, I will bring you a SWOT analysis for Clemson football. In this edition we take the Strengths and Threats portion for the 2026 Clemson Tiger offense.
Strength: Clemson returns WRs TJ Moore, Bryant Wesco, and Tyler Brown, while adding three top freshmen.
For years, Tiger fans complained about the job WR Coach Tyler Grisham was doing as the wide receiver position precipitously declined after the departure of Coach Jeff Scott. It certainly declined, though it was Jeff Scott recruits — most memorably Frank Ladson, Joe Ngata, and Ajou Ajou — we didn’t live up to their recruiting pedigree. Now, Coach Grisham has gotten his feet under him and landed two seemingly great classes that compose the best position group on the entire offense.
TJ Moore and Bryant Wesco now enter their junior seasons. Both are coming off seasons where they posted 70+ PFF grades and 837 and 537 receiving yards, respectively. Wesco missed the end of the season with a neck injury that occurred on a special teams play and has been limited in Spring, but should be a full go early in the season. TJ Moore seems poised for a breakout campaign.
Antonio Williams and Tristan Smith are the only losses from the WR corps and there’s no denying replacing Williams will be especially difficult. He posted an 80 PFF grade and led all Tigers with 55 receptions. Fortunately, the Tigers have options for the slot position. Tyler Brown returns for his redshirt junior season. After 531 receiving yards as a true freshman, he has just 221 in the two seasons since then. Now, he has an opportunity to remerge as a major part of the passing offense. He led all players with 47 yards and 1 receiving TD in the Spring game and — if he can stay healthy — may draw closer to the 531 yards he had as a freshman than the 221 he has had since.
Another option in the slot is true freshman Naheem Burroughs. He had 3 catches for 28 yards in the spring game and seems well-suited for the slot position. Expect him to get opportunities there throughout the season.
Gordon Sellars from Charlotte, North Carolina had 3 catches for 34 yards in the Spring Game which comes on the heels of positive reports from OC Chad Morris about his progress. Coach Swinney said he is the furthest along of the three freshman receivers. The other freshman is Connor Salmin who may have the most speed and strength, but seems slightly further out from making an impact. All of this is without even mentioning Cole Turner who provides steady veteran leadership and depth for a group where so many boast elite potential.
If Clemson’s passing game isn’t top-notch, it won’t be because of the wide receivers.
Threat: What if QB Vizzina is too limited and Tait Reynolds isn’t ready?
Clemson had a chance late in the year to get a good long look at QB Christopher Vizzina. Cade Klubnik was injured against Boston College and Vizzina had to step in. For whatever reason, he wasn’t given much leash. He was horrible against Boston College going 1/3 with an INT. Against SMU, he threw for 319 yards 3 TDs and 0 INTs and seemed ready to lead the way. Unfortunately, Klubnik was back and the Tigers lost to Duke. That loss essentially ended any hope of Clemson sneaking into an ACC Championship or a meaningful bowl, but Vizzina nonetheless only saw action in the Furman game here was severely outshined by Chris Denson. He was not used in the Pinstripe Bowl even though the offense struggled and it was an ideal time to gain experience.
The lack of playing time for Vizzina in the bowl seemed like a signal that they’d use the transfer portal for their 2026 QB, but that wasn’t the case. Tigers did not pursue a QB and Coach Swinney has said Christopher Vizzina is the clear #1 while freshman Tait Reynolds is the clear #2. He suggested Chris Denson may need to consider a position change a Brock Bradley, a freshman I have been extremely high one, needs to develop physically.
If Vizzina is cut loose more than OC Garrett Riley ever allowed and plays like he did against SMU, the Tigers will be in good shape at the position. If he looks how he did nearly every other time Clemson fans have watched him or the offense has a limited deep threat as was reportedly the case during spring (albeit with a severely limited WR corps due to injury) this could be a problem.
