Gus Malzahn may not be roaming the sidelines anymore, but the former coach will maintain an important job in the college football world.
On March 30, the 60-year-old was announced as one of three new members of the College Football Playoff selection committee, joining Louisiana athletic director Bryan Maggard and former Cal and Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford. They will begin their three-year terms this upcoming season.
“The additions of Bryan Maggard, Gus Malzahn and Jeff Tedford will introduce strong, fresh perspectives to the selection committee as we enter our 13th season,” CFP executive director Rich Clark said in a statement. “Each brings a deep understanding of the game, a genuine passion for college football and a commitment to integrity and excellence. Their diverse backgrounds as university leaders, recent coaches and former student-athletes will complement our returning members and allow for a seamless transition.”
Malzahn spent last fall as the offensive coordinator at Florida State. He announced his retirement in February.
Before his time with the Seminoles, he served as the head coach at Arkansas State (2012), Auburn (2013-20) and UCF (2021-24), compiling a 105–62 record.
He won the Sun Belt Conference championship in his one year with the Red Wolves and followed that with an SEC crown and an appearance in the national title game with Auburn in 2013.
During his four seasons in Orlando, Malzahn steered the Knights to three bowl games. They slumped to 4-8 in 2024, leading to his resignation and arrival at FSU as OC. The Seminoles went 5-7 and ranked third in the ACC in points per game.
Malzahn and Co. will replace Chris Ault, Jeff Long and David Sayler on the selection committee after their terms expired.
The committee also revealed Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek will return as chair for a second campaign in 2026.
