Gus Malzahn News Emerges After Decision to Retire From College Football

Former Florida State offensive coordinator and Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn has a new gig.

Malzahn has joined the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. The committee is responsible for selecting the 12 teams that make the CFP each year and ranking the teams each week.

Per On3, Malzahn will begin a three-year term starting this spring.

Malzahn spent the 2025 college football season as Florida State’s offensive coordinator under head coach Mike Norvell before retiring from coaching. He was UCF’s head coach from 2021-24, compiling a 28-24 record. He led the program to nine wins twice.

Before that, he was the head coach at Auburn from 2013-20, compiling a 68-35 record. He led the team to the BCS National Championship Game during the 2013 season, only to lose to Florida State.

However, he did win a national title with Auburn in 2010 as the program’s offensive coordinator. As a head coach, he racked up a 105-62 overall record.

The 2026 college football season may still be five months away from starting, but it’s never too early for the CFP Committee to finalize its members.

Indiana won the national title in 2025 and will try to defend it next season. The Hoosiers will open their national title defense on Sept. 5 against the North Texas Mean Green, followed by a Sept. 12 matchup against the Howard Bison.

The Hoosiers’ first game against a Big Ten foe will be Sept. 26 against Northwestern.
