Three storylines to watch during Washington Huskies spring practice

As the Washington Huskies prepare for their third spring practice under Jedd Fisch, things are going to look a little different. With some key contributors off to the NFL, namely wide receiver Denzel Boston and running back Jonah Coleman, along with left tackle Carver Willis, and cornerbacks Ephesians Prysock and Tacario Davis, Fisch's coaching staff has plenty of big holes to fill.
However, UW has also seen a talent infusion both through the transfer portal and the 2026 class, which could wind up making for a deeper roster. But with so much untested talent, spring will be critical to sort out depth all over the field.
With the Huskies set to take the field for their first practice of the spring on Tuesday, here are three storylines to follow over the next month.
Freshmen in the trenches
With Willis out the door, the Huskies are only replacing one full-time starter along the offensive line, but at arguably the most important position: left tackle. Fisch has already stated that he expects former five-star recruit and true freshman to come in and compete for the starting job right away, where the Huskies also added one of the top-rated tackles from the transfer portal, former Sam Houston State standout Kolt Dieterich.
Along the defensive line, Washington is planning on a pair of former four-star recruits: defensive tackle Tufanua Ionatana "TI" Umu-Cais and edge rusher Derek Colman-Brusa acting as major pieces of the rotation right away. With Colman-Brusa, who is rumored to be weighing in at over 295 pounds already, his usage will be of particular intrigue, as his high school film shows the desired physicality and play strength to take on a big role along the interior of the defensive line.
What's the plan at running back?
Just clarifying here — Cooley is with the team but not cleared/fully available until summer as he recovers from his August knee injury. https://t.co/Mc4Try3Grs

In an interview with OnMontlake's Christian Caple (subscription required), Fisch shared that the Huskies are going to be a little thin at running back during spring practice. Not only will newly-acquired transfer Trey Cooley be unavailable until August as he continues to recover from a knee injury, but Oregon transfer Jayden Limar will also not be able to suit up after undergoing ankle surgery.
That will only increase the workload for sophomore Jordan Washington and redshirt freshman Quaid Carr, who Fisch and position coach Scottie Graham have had high praise for. On top of that, another freshman, former four-star Brian Bonner, also appears to be in line for some significant reps as the Huskies will seemingly prepare to play him in every game this fall, just as they did with Adam Mohammed in 2024.
Also of note, redshirt freshman D'Aryhian Clemons is now listed as a running back after spending the 2025 season as a defensive back.
What will the depth at wide receiver look like?

The Huskies are bringing in a pair of receivers from the transfer portal in Christian Moss and Bodpegn Miller, along with a trio of blue-chip freshmen: Jordan Clay, Trez Davis, and Mason James, from the high school ranks. How will Fisch and Kevin Cummings get them on the field?
That's without even mentioning the returning talent like 2025 Freshman All-American Dezmen Roebuck, sophomore Chris Lawson, and the combination of Rashid and Justice Williams, all of whom the UW coaching staff has high hopes for moving forward. With several promising options, but only so many snaps to go around, it seems very likely that the Huskies will employ some heavy rotations to give everyone a shot at catching passes from Demond Williams Jr. this fall.
