Michigan State football is implementing a new offensive scheme this spring, so there’s no better person to hear from than new offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan.
Sheridan met with the media on Tuesday to talk about the first few weeks of spring practice and how things have progressed thus far. Sheridan is one of many new faces on the Spartans coaching staff this spring, coming in from Alabama to work under new head coach Pat Fitzgerald.
During his media session, Sheridan highlighted his strong relationship with Fitzgerald, his vision for the Spartans offense and one particular player that has stood out so far in spring.
Here are some of the highlights from Sheridan’s latest media session following a spring practice session on Tuesday morning:
- Sheridan complimented head coach Pat Fitzgerald for doing an “incredible job” of putting together the new Michigan State football staff
- Sheridan said it was an easy decision to coming Michigan State as the Spartans new offensive coordinator, noted how he grew up a fan of Spartans T.J. Turner and Josh Thornhill.
- Sheridan stated he looks up to Fitzgerald and considers him a coach he wants to be like.
- Sheridan gave some insight to the scheme and plans for his offensive style: “We are attacking in nature, decisions we make, schemes we make. We wanna feature our playmakers. We have had great success doing that.”
- Sheridan additionally said the Spartans are in the “infant stages” of implementing their offensive plans for the upcoming season.
- Sheridan talked about his love for coaching and teaching, and if he wasn’t involved in football then he’d probably coach some other sport like baseball or lacrosse.
- Sheridan stressed the priority and need to “carrying the football the right way.”
- Similar to Fitzgerald, Sheridan had some high praise for new Ferris State transfer tight end Carson Gulker — “We refer to guys like Gulker as ‘positionless players.’ Guys that can catch, block, run the ball. The more you do well, the harder it is for defenses to defend. You don’t know how to defend them.”
