When Gus Malzahn retired from coaching after the 2025 season, the question was: what would the longtime coach do? Could he retire off into the Florida (or Arkansas) sunset, or would the media have a spot for him? On Monday, it announced that Malzahn will be joining the College Football Playoff committee this upcoming season.
Malzahn will be joining former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford and Louisiana athletic director Bryan Maggard on the committee. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek will return as the chairman of the group. The new members will serve on the committee for the next three years. So, Malzahn will have a say in who will compete for college football’s biggest prize over the next three seasons.
Malzahn retired after 35 years of coaching in early February after one season as the offensive coordinator of the Florida State Seminoles. Before the 2025 season, he spent the previous 13 seasons as a head coach at Arkansas State, Auburn, and UCF. Over that time, he had a record of 105-62 and had his teams bowl eligible each season, other than his final one in 2024 with UCF.
His coaching career will also be most remembered from his time at Auburn as a head coach from 2013-2020 and offensive coordinator from 2009-11. As the Tigers’ offensive coordinator, he helped coach and develop Cam Newton into a Heisman Trophy and BCS Championship-winning quarterback. After the 2011 season, he was hired to be the head coach at Arkansas State. His stay there would not be long. Malzahn would be hired to replace Gene Chizik after the 2012 season.
There were a lot of ups and downs for Malzahn at Auburn. The memorable 2013 season will always be a highlight featuring the “Kick Six” and an SEC Championship. Auburn was one win away from a spot in the College Football Playoff but a loss in the 2017 SEC Championship versus the Georgia Bulldogs. Also, Malzahn was one of the most successful coaches against Nick Saban. As the Auburn head coach, he defeated Alabama three times and was involved in two more wins against the Crimson Tide as an offensive coordinator.
With his experience in college football, Malzahn should have an interesting take on who should play in the College Football Playoff each season.
