QB Colin Hurley, competing for Michigan backup spot, off roster

The depth for Michigan football at quarterback no longer appears quite so robust.

Colin Hurley, who committed to transferring from LSU to U-M and new coach Kyle Whittingham on Jan. 13, is no longer with the program, a team spokesman confirmed to the Free Press on Tuesday, March 31.

He’s no longer listed on the team’s roster.

Hurley spent the past two seasons in Baton Rouge but never appeared in a game. In 2024, he redshirted; in 2025, he missed time in the spring after spending time in the hospital following a single-car crash.

Hurley was a four-star prospect coming out of Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida, in the class of 2024. He was originally in the 2025 class before he reclassified and arrived at LSU as a 16-year-old in January 2024.

Hurley arrived in Ann Arbor expecting to compete for the backup job behind Bryce Underwood, who started all of the 2025 season as a true freshman after choosing Michigan as the No. 1 player in the class of 2025. U-M also has a transfer commitment from Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi (Colorado State), who is also absent from the roster released earlier this month.

Fowler-Nicolosi, who appeared in 28 games with the Rams over the past three seasons, is expected to arrive sometime this summer, according to a U-M spokesman.

According to U-M coaches, Underwood and true freshman Tommy Carr (Saline) have primarily gotten snaps during March’s practices. The other two quarterbacks on the roster are redshirt freshman Chase Herbstreit and true freshman Brady Smigiel, who tore his ACL in October while finishing his senior season in California.

U-M’s QB reserves have seen a lot of turnover; Jadyn Davis (East Tennessee State), Mikey Keene (Arizona State) and former starter Davis Warren (Stanford) all transferred out this offseason.

Michigan had made it a point to build up depth behind Underwood after adding newly hired quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr.
