The Grammy-winning artist shared that she had made a promise to herself as a teenager: she would wait to have sex until she won a Grammy.

Lizzo is opening up about a deeply personal chapter of her life, revealing that she lost her virginity shortly after her breakout moment at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards and admitting she kept the truth private for years.

Speaking on the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, the Grammy-winning artist shared that she had made a promise to herself as a teenager: she would wait to have sex until she won a Grammy. That milestone finally came in 2020, when she took home three awards, including Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit song “Truth Hurts.”

Although she didn’t follow through on that promise the same night, Lizzo said it happened not long after. She also acknowledged that she had previously misrepresented her experience, telling friends she was not a virgin because she felt embarrassed at the time. “I lied about it for a long time,” she said, adding that finally telling the truth felt like a relief.

Now 37, Lizzo described herself as a “late bloomer,” explaining that her upbringing and religious beliefs played a major role in her decision to wait. As a teenager, she and her church peers made a pact to abstain from sex until marriage. Even later, she said fear and insecurity contributed to her delayed experiences, including not having her first kiss until age 21.

“Like, when we were teenagers at my church, we all made a pact that we wouldn’t do anything before marriage. And then, I was just so scared. Like, nobody wanted to kiss me,” she shared.

That first kiss, she says, was a negative experience, feeling forced and leaving her upset. The moment, which happened on New Year’s Eve, did not live up to expectations and added to her complicated feelings about relationships at the time.

In recent years, Lizzo has been more open about her personal life. She has been in a relationship with comedian Myke Wright since 2021, though the two first met years earlier while working together.

The singer’s candid remarks highlight her ongoing effort to be transparent with fans about her journey, including the pressures, insecurities and personal choices that shaped her path to success.
