Notre Dame Football Midweek Rundown

NCAAF College Football News, Photos, Stats, Scores, Schedule & Videos...

It's time for the Notre Dame Football midweek rundown. The Irish just wrapped up their sixth spring practice. Today was also their first time going full contact this offseason. Head coach Marcus Freeman gave an update earlier this morning about how things were going and there were a lot of takeaways. He gave an injury update, talked through letting the players loose in practice and talked about the offensive line and defensive line. There was a lot to take away from his press conference this morning.

Now that we're nearing the half-way point in spring practice, we also ranked the five position groups on offense on where things stand today. Then we talked through Notre Dame's most underrated recruits that are notable alumni, currently on the team and top targets in the 2027 recruiting cycle. We wrapped everything up by talking about the major quarterback battles going on throughout college football and their implications. You can listen to all of that and more in today's episode of the Irish Breakdown Podcast.

You can watch the entire show here:

Here are some of the main topics we discussed on today's episode:

On Freeman's Comments About Letting The Players Loose In Practice

"You're going to give CJ Carr a longer rope to try things compared to other quarterbacks of the past. Some of those guys had to play within the structure of the offense. They have to throw the ball a certain way with this timing and this rhythm. For guys like Carr, they don't have to live within the confines of the offense all the time. You have dudes that can be playmakers but you have to let them loose a little bit. That includes knowing that, sometimes, they're going to make mistakes. Carr's aggressiveness will result in interceptions this fall. But you live with it because it's going to also result in seven or eight huge plays for every interception."

On Underrated Prospects In Recruiting Classes

"As good as it is to load up on five-star recruits and blue-chip recruits, every recruiting class needs the underrated guys to step up and become impact players. Notre Dame has a lot of guys like that on their current roster and we believe that the Irish have a top three roster in the country and they're not third. But you need every kind of player to build a championship caliber roster."

On The Quarterback Battle At Alabama…

"This is a big battle, Trev. I think both of these kids can be successful at Alabama but I think that one of them gives them a higher ceiling than the other. When you think about it, it's a lot like Notre Dame's quarterback battle last year. On one hand, you have the younger, five-star, high-ceiling player. On the other hand, you have the older, experienced, smart player in the battle. What's going to carry the day? That's the big question, and you're in a win-win scenario either way."
