Top QB Recruit Will Mencl Praises Penn State Visit Amid Oregon's Lead

The Penn State Nittany Lions and head coach Matt Campbell have found themselves in the middle of a heated recruiting battle for class of 2027 quarterback Will Mencl, out of Chandler, Arizona.

As a five-star recruit, the No. 1-ranked quarterback and No. 4 player in the nation, per Rivals, he’s garnered a lot of attention. He’s beginning to narrow down his top schools, which, according to Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong, include Penn State, the Oregon Ducks, Auburn Tigers and Miami Hurricanes.

Each of these is earning the opportunity to host Mencl for a visit. The Nittany Lions looked to make a big impression as they hosted the signal caller on Thursday.

It was the first time Mencl made his way to Happy Valley for a visit, only adding to the pressure for Campbell and his staff. Following his time on campus, he spoke to Wiltfong and praised the experience.

“I had a great time at Penn State these past couple of days,” Mencl said. “The quality of people this staff has continues to impress me and my family the more we continue to grow the relationship… Definitely an incredible campus and great facilities.”

Last season for Chandler High School, he threw for 3,815 yards, 33 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 741 yards and 17 touchdowns, showing off impressive production.

While the Nittany Lions did impress Mencl, Oregon sits as the clear favorite for his commitment. According to the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Ducks have a 97.4% chance to land Mencl, while Penn State sits at less than 1%.

If Penn State can turn things around, though, he would be a major addition to their 2027 recruiting class. Campbell has already landed five commitments, ranking eighth in the Big Ten and 25th in the nation.
