Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels caught the eye of several college football experts following his impressive performance in the Tigers’ Week 11 game at Vanderbilt.
In his second start as an Auburn Tiger, Daniels completed 31 passes for 353 yards and two touchdowns, with 21 of those completions going to either Eric Singleton or Cam Coleman. He also added two rushing touchdowns while gaining 89 yards on the ground. His efforts were a major factor in the Tigers’ best offensive showing of the season.
ESPN’s Bill Connelly took notice of Daniels’ solid showing, which led Connelly to include Daniels in this week’s Power Four quarterback re-ranking.
This week, Daniels enters the ranking at No. 39, ahead of several notable names, including LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava, and South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers. Connelly is interested to see how Daniels will build on his performance at Vanderbilt over the Tigers’ final two regular season games.
I thought Daniels might win the starting QB job over Jackson Arnold in the offseason, and although I was incorrect about that … maybe he should have? Granted, his first start after replacing Arnold, against Kentucky, was bad enough to get Hugh Freeze fired, but he was outstanding in leading a near upset of Vanderbilt last Saturday. Let’s see if he can build on that in the season’s final two games.
There is an issue regarding Daniels, however. Daniels has appeared in three games this season and still has the opportunity to return to the program next season as a redshirt senior. If Daniels starts in both of Auburn’s final two regular-season games vs. Mercer and vs. Alabama, his redshirt will be burned, and he will exhaust his college eligibility. Auburn interim head coach DJ Durkin addressed the issue earlier this week.
“(Daniel’s) situation is kind of unique in that regard,” Durkin said Monday. “We always try to do two things: what’s best for the young man and his family, and what’s best for the program. Those are ongoing decisions and discussions throughout this week.”
Will Daniels start in Auburn’s next game? We must wait a week to find out. Auburn is enjoying its second bye week of the season and will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22, against the Mercer Bears at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
