Former LSU football coach Brian Kelly was on the CBS Sports analyst desk earlier this week. Kelly was asked to break down some of the top NFL Draft prospects. Among that group was Kelly's LSU quarterback — Garrett Nussmeier.

Nussmeier spent five years at LSU and was a two-year starter. He never quite put it all together, but Nussmeier had moments of brilliance and his talent is tantalizing for NFL teams. Kelly had a glowing report on the gunslinger.

"First of all, you talk about a guy that's committed. He waited his turn behind Jayden Daniels. Could have very easily transferred in that period of time, like many others, and sought another opportunity, but he wanted to be a Tiger. He wanted to play for LSU," Kelly said.

Kelly highlighted Nussmeier's football background, as Garrett is the son of NFL offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier.

"He has an incredible football IQ and he has an incredible off-platform throwing ability. He doesn't just need to be a three-step drop. He can throw it sidearm, he can move, he can escape. I just love the kid and can't wait to see what happens in the NFL," Kelly said.

Nussmeier's 2025 was a weird one. The picture surrounding his health was never quite clear. There were rumors of an injury sustained in training camp and Nussmeier didn't look right when the season began. He would underthrow passes and his arm lacked the usual zip. Kelly maintained Nussmeier was on the right track, but after Kelly was fired, LSU eventually shut Nussmeier down late in the year.

"The injuries really set him back this year," Kelly said.

"Staying healthy is going to be really important. If he does, he's going to deliver the ball to playmakers."
