College football has always, to some extent, been about the off-the-field activities, whether it be recruiting or coaching contracts. But the legal system’s role in the sport has quickly grown in recent years, and Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian isn’t a fan.
While there are understandable reasons as to why college football programs and/or universities would go to the courts, Sarkisian is tired of seeing teams doing so in order to get around NCAA rules that might be unfavorable to them.
“The problem is we all signed up to be part of the NCAA, every school did. And we all agree to the rule, of what the rules are supposed to be. But the moment a rule doesn’t go my way, I run and go get a judge to get an injunction to say, ‘No, I don’t like the rule.’ No, you signed up for this,” Sarkisian said on the ‘Get Got’ podcast with Marshawn Lynch and Mike Robinson.
“We have to figure out a way to say, when you sign up for this, these are the rules, these are the consequences when you break those rules. That’s what the NFL has done. If you want to give the NFL credit for anything, they have done that.”
Notably, fellow SEC school Ole Miss, which Texas will host in October, successfully sued the NCAA in Mississippi to grant quarterback Trinidad Chambliss a sixth year of eligibility. Many have pointed out that Judge Robert Whitwell, who oversaw the Chambliss case, graduated from the University of Mississippi’s School of Law, arguing his relationship with the school is a conflict of interest.
Before facing the Rebels on Oct. 24 in Austin, the Longhorns have matchups with, among others, Ohio State, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Florida.
