Texas A&M Aggies fans should be rooting for bitter SEC rival and former foe to help lock up top College Football Playoff spot

The Texas A&M Aggies are a virtual lock to make the 2025 College Football Playoffs at 9-0. Barring a complete collapse and perhaps a major injury like what happened to Florida State, they are making it in. However, the debate rages over whether they should be the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd seed in the playoff rankings, which is a jarring difference this year. As it stands now, the number one seed will draw the winner of Notre Dame-Oregon, while the two will draw Texas-Ole Miss, and three will host Miami-Texas Tech. Those teams will shift, but each matchup comes with teams the Aggies would want to play and wouldn't want.

Currently, the playoff committee continues to insist on the Aggies as the third seed behind Ohio State and Indiana. Their rationale for doing so has been inconsistent at best, and it's frustrated fans to no end. If A&M wants to vault themselves into those top two seeds, it seems their schedule will need to do the talking for them instead of their play on the field, an undoubtedly irritating factor for Mike Elko and the Aggies' coaching staff.

Which teams should Texas A&M fans be rooting for this weekend, given their Aggies’ schedule and what do they need to happen to secure a trip to both the SEC Championship Game and strengthen their bid for a top two seed?

#10 Texas OVER #5 Georgia

I know that suggesting an Aggies fan rooting for the Texas Longhorns is akin to taboo (trust me, I live in Texas), but this could be a huge resume booster for the Aggies come the end of the year. If (somehow) Texas can overcome the Bulldogs on the road, that will easily be another top-ten win on the schedule for the Aggies provided they can turn around and handle business in their final game of the season when they take on the Longhorns.

No other team in the country would have two top-ten wins up to that point, and that's something the committee can't dance around or misinterpret. If you add another win in the conference championship on top of yet another, that would be three top-ten wins heading into the postseason as well as taking down two ranked (at the time) opponents on the road, that's a strength of resume that the committee would be forced to know it. I know, it's probably hard to swallow, but pinch your nose and bear it Aggies fans. It'll be worth it.

#9 Notre Dame OVER #22 Pittsburgh

This one feels rather straightforward and feeds into the last one. A&M needs Notre Dame to continue winning out and staying in the top ten to keep their strength of schedule high. Indiana's win over Oregon has been buoying them over A&M in the rankings, and the Aggies can't afford a slip up here by the Fighting Irish if they want a quality win on their resume.

Additionally, knocking out as many ACC opponents as possible has a secondary benefit of helping A&M in case disaster strikes and they have to play for an at-large bid. The possibility of them having to contend with a 2-loss Pitt is admittedly slim, but every little bit counts here, and making the ACC as unviable as possible would be a win for the Aggies in this scenario.

Florida OVER #7 Ole Miss

This one is a long shot, but this would quietly be a good reinforcement of A&M's strength of schedule. If Florida can prove they can take down Ole Miss after the Aggies thoroughly dismantled them a few weeks ago, that helps boost A&M's strength of schedule and establishes them as in a different tier of the rest of the SEC. After all, if A&M can clobber Florida and Florida can beat Ole Miss, how big is the gap between these two teams?

Honorable Mention: Chaos in the Big Ten

Expecting either of Wisconsin or UCLA to take down Indiana or Ohio State this week feels incredibly slim, but Friday's game of Minnesota-Oregon is worth keeping an eye on. Oregon is battling a ton of injuries and limped to the finish line to beat Iowa last weekend. If Minnesota can pull off the upset of the Ducks, that takes out a quality win from Indiana's resume and could be the edge the Aggies need to finally leapfrog the Hoosiers.
