Former Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier appeared at Georgia‘s practice, according to Graham Coffey.
That could be an indication of Napier potentially helping Georgia defeat Texas. Napier’s Gators defeated the No. 10 Texas Longhorns in Week 5, and with the Bulldogs playing the Longhorns at home on Saturday, Napier’s guidance could make a difference for Georgia.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart explained why Napier attended Georgia’s practice. He did not indicate that Napier has a role on Georgia’s staff as an analyst or anything like that.
“I mean, people don’t understand relationships in coaches,” Smart said. “Coaches have a brotherhood and a fraternity together, and his dad was good friends with my dad. His dad was really good friends with coach Bobo, and we all grew up in the state of Georgia with our fathers coaching high school football. They were well-respected people. He’s been a friend for a long time, so he dropped by, yeah, but that was really it.”
If Napier doing more than just stopping by, then it would be presumed that he would help out with Georgia’s offense. The Bulldogs boast one of the best offenses in the country, ranking 16th in points per game and 25th in total yards per game, but any help could be good help.
The Bulldogs aren’t short on former Florida Gators on their coaching staff either. Former Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp is a defensive analyst for Georgia. Co-defensive coordinators and safeties coordinator Travaris Robinson was also Florida’s defensive backs coach from 2011-14.
Napier was the head coach of Florida from 2022-25. He went 22-23 with the Gators, but he never earned more than an 8-5 record. Napier was fired just two weeks after defeating Texas. The Bulldogs faced Florida in the game after Napier was fired, winning 24-20.
