How much does a football national championship cost? It seems like the price tag might be headed for the moon, but Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti doesn’t think teams have to break the bank to win it all.
$40 million is the number that was floated by Alabama football GM Courtney Morgan as the baseline programs need to spend in order to field a team that is capable of winning the national championship. While he admitted that he didn’t know for what other programs were doing for sure, Morgan came up with the estimate based on experience and observation.
Cignetti threw cold water on that minimum, replying to a response from an Indy Sports X account to Morgan, communicating that the Hoosiers’ football program did not reach that threshold.

Cignetti’s answer indicates that while budget can help a program vault into the national title conversation, coaching and development are the elements that ultimately bring a team to the mountain top.
