Former Pro Bowl QB Kordell Stewart Asking To Join Deion Sanders' Staff

There's a debate to be had over whether the hype of Deion Sanders' tenure as head coach of Colorado has worn off or not, but the Colorado alumni still want to be involved. One person who wants to get really hands-on with the team is a famous Colorado star turned Pro Bowl QB.

In an interview with the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson, former NFL QB and Colorado alum Kordell "Slash" Stewart said that he would love to get into coaching and work for Sanders. He said that he's spoken to Coach Prime about opportunities in the past but recognizes that Sanders doesn't owe him a job despite them being friends for many years.

“When you’re ‘Slash,’ you do a whole bunch of stuff,’’ Stewart said. “Coaching is something I love to do tremendously. I would love to have it be at my institution, to be honest with you, because I just love being here."

“We’ve had conversations [about a possible job], but [Sanders] has to do what he has to do. He’s a friend more than anybody I need to have hire me as a coach. And if it’s time for me to have that opportunity to be here with him or anybody else, I’ll bite on it real quick and come in and do it.

“He’s got a great staff since he’s been here,’’ Stewart said. “He doesn’t owe anything to me… He knows I love to coach. If there’s a space for me, trust me, I’ll take it and run with it.”

Stewart played in the NFL for 11 years, mostly with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and made the Pro Bowl in 2001 while leading the team to a 13-3 record that season.

A critical year

But while the sentiment from Stewart may be right, the timing really couldn't be worse.

Sanders is heading into an absolutely critical year as head coach of the Buffaloes. He had to replace pretty much his entire coaching staff and his roster is going to look wildly different from the one he went 9-4 with in 2024.

While there may have been room for Stewart on the staff during his first couple of years, Sanders really can't afford to have too many people learning on the job – no matter how passionate they are about Colorado football.

But never say never.
