Brendan Sorsby's Gambling Addiction Is A Sign Of What's To Come In College Football

Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech's star quarterback transfer reportedly set to make more than $5 million this year, is a gambling addict.

The standout college football quarterback will be seeking further treatment for his addiction at a residential treatment center.

He is taking an indefinite leave of absence with no timetable set for his return. The college football regular season opens in about four months.

"Sorsby's decision to seek treatment, according to sources, came in the wake of the discovery of Sorsby making thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app, which jeopardizes his eligibility with Texas Tech," ESPN reported.

"The NCAA is investigating Sorsby's gambling, according to sources, as the organization forbids athletes from betting on both college and pro sports."

Sorsby might be the first college football star to publicly seek treatment for a gambling addiction, but he won't be the last.

Gambling is becoming more and more ingrained into our society. Even ESPN, which broke the story, is constantly pushing gambling onto its viewers.

It's not going away.

More college football stars – and other athletes – will likely face similar issues

As long as gambling is as easy as pressing a few buttons on your phone, addiction problems will persist – especially at the college level.

College athletes, at a young age, are making a ton of money. The lure of gambling will be there for many, too. Unfortunately, not all will be able to stay away from it.

Even though the NCAA will hand out strict penalties – perhaps even lifetime bans – for gambling, there will likely be several more players who have to deal with this as time goes on.

It's a growing, pressing issue in this country.
