BATON ROUGE — LSU football starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier reaggravated a “nagging” injury during Thursday’s practice, interim coach Frank Wilson told reporters after the team’s practice.
Wilson said Nussmeier tweaked his abdomen. The senior battled an abdominal injury during preseason practice through the first few weeks of the 2025 college football season. LSU (5-4, 2-4 SEC) is set to play Arkansas inside Tiger Stadium on Saturday (11:45 a.m., SEC Network).
“A little nagging injury reoccured itself today with Garrett Nussmeier and I think he’s probable,” Wilson said. “But a little bit concerning. It’s something that we need to monitor and continue to watch with him as we head into the game.”

Wilson said sophomore Michael Van Buren would be LSU’s starting quarterback if Nussmeier is unable to play against Arkansas, saying he had “a good week” of practice.
“Today at practice, Garrett was the starter and has been all week. We’ll continue to monitor his situation to see how he is. If we have to start Michael, if it got down to that, we feel good that he’s fully capable of doing so,” Wilson said. “But as of today, Garrett will be the starter going into this game.”
Nussmeier was benched during the Alabama game last week and Van Buren entered the contest with less than seven minutes left in the third quarter and finished the game. Van Buren was 5-of-11 passing for 52 yards and rushed for a yard.
Earlier this week, Wilson shared LSU’s plan on offense was to play both Nussmeier and Van Buren against the Razorbacks.
With there only being one full day between Thursday’s practice and the matchup with the Razorbacks (2-7, 0-5), the time Nussmeier has to get healthy before a Saturday morning kickoff is limited. LSU’s athletic trainers and doctors will work the quarterback to attempt to get him ready.
“We have to monitor him, nurture him, we have to care for him to allow him to be at his very best on Saturday,” Wilson said. “Our doctors, our trainers are all on top of that to do the things necessary to allow him to have some pain tolerance and give him the things necessary to have relief.”
