The Michigan Wolverines lost a key piece to their 2027 recruiting class on Tuesday night, as four-star safety Darrell Mattison has decommitted.

The 6-foot-2, 160-pounder from Chicago was the first commitment of the Kyle Whittingham era in the 2027 class, doing so back in March. Mattison was was offered by Michigan in January, took a trip to Ann Arbor earlier this spring, and eventually pulled the trigger on his commitment. He also came back for Michigan’s spring game.

However, a weekend visit to Ole Miss changed things in a big way. Members of Michigan’s coaching staff traveled to his high school on Monday — this trip was coincidentally already planned, per On3’s Ethan McDowell ($) — but it still wasn’t enough to prevent Mattison from decommitting.

As of now, Mattison has not flipped to Ole Miss, but that is the full expectation at some point in the future.

The Wolverines now have just five committed prospects in the 2027 class, including another safety in three-star Maxwell Miles, who also committed in March.
