Former star for the Alabama Crimson Tide is suing the SEC, Big-10, and NCAA to get what he believes he deserves monetarily

College Football has changed rapidly since the beginning of the decade. When NIL was first introduced, I remember seeing Bo Nix advertising for a sweet tea company in Alabama when he played for the other guys.

Now, college football has turned into full-on pay-for-play, with recruiting and the transfer portal largely hinging on how much a player will make, rather than the opportunity they will receive. That, along with a lot more, has opened the NCAA up to potential legal action, and an Alabama Crimson Tide star turned NFL player is the latest to seek legal counsel.

Former Alabama WR Jameson Williams suing the NCAA, BIG-10, SEC

Williams' lawsuit states, "Williams has received no fair compensation from Defendants for the full commercial value of his name, image, and likeness. Defendants continuously financially benefit from Jameson Williams' name, image, and likeness rights, while also doing so without providing him with just compensation."

"The social media earnings that [he] would have received but for Defendants' unlawful conduct" as well as a cut of the "the game telecast group licensing revenue" he said the defendants earned, in part, due to his success on college football fields.” – New York Post

The reason that Williams is suing both the Big-10 and SEC is that he started his career with the Ohio State Buckeyes before transferring to Alabama, where he would go on to become one of the best WRs in the nation.

Despite tearing his ACL in the national championship game, Williams went in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, being selected 12th overall by the Detroit Lions. These sorts of suits have become common in recent years, and I would venture to say it’s not the last time we see a former Alabama player suing governing bodies in the NCAA for name, image, and likeness issues.
