Is Brendan Sorsby's Career Over? New Details Emerge From Gambling Scandal

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby may have no choice but to move on from college football.
Sorsby, 22, announced this week that he's checking into a treatment program due to a gambling addiction. The talented transfer from Cincinnati is currently viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in the country. In 2025, he completed 61.6% of his passes for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns and five interceptions.
It's unclear when Sorsby will return to the gridiron, and even though Texas Tech shelled out $5 million just to get him, the school is at peace with his situation.
"We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help," Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said. "Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health."
The optics aren't great for Sorsby.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, Sorsby has reportedly placed more than 10,000 wagers since 2022. Not only did he reportedly gamble on Indiana games while he was redshirting, he allegedly averaged 20 bets per day.
"The quarterback placed bets across multiple states, using a range of gambling apps, including Hard Rock Bet, BetMGM, DraftKings, PrizePicks and bet365, among others, sources said. A USA Today report on Monday night stated the Cincinnati athletic department was alerted in August that star quarterback Brendan Sorsby was gambling before the start of the 2025 season," Nakos wrote. "Sources familiar with the situation told On3 that the Cincinnati athletic department was aware of Sorsby’s gambling before the summer of 2025, but the athletic department would not knowingly play an athlete who violated NCAA rules."
Although a final decision hasn't been made yet by the NCAA, most people doubt Sorsby will play a single snap for Texas Tech this fall.
"It feels like he’s not playing college football ever again," Ari Wasserman of On3 said.
"This dude should never be allowed on the field again," another person wrote on X.
"Gambling is addictive by design and it’s being pushed on kids whose brains are not even fully formed," one person commented. "They are developing habits in their teens & 20s that could ruin their entire lives. We should be taking this just as seriously as smoking or drinking, if not more.
"It’s honestly insane how back then he probably had no idea he would ever get to the point of receiving millions in NIL playing college football, and now instead of getting that money and playing for a top team he’s likely never playing football again," a social media user wrote. "Sad to see."
The NCAA has said that student-athletes who wager on their own games could face "permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports." If they bet on a different school, "the loss of 50-percent of one season of eligibility will be considered."
We'll see if the NCAA drops the hammer on Sorsby.
