Texas Tech star quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s recently revealed gambling addiction is affecting his career in more ways than one. After it was reported that he had been struggling with a severe addiction for years, spanning his career at Cincinnati and Indiana, the 22-year-old is now in danger of losing out on his $5 million NIL purse.

Sorsby is one of the highest-paid players in college football after signing a $5 million NIL deal with Texas Tech after his transfer from Cincinnati. However, those payments have understandably been placed on hold while his career hangs in the balance.

Since arriving in Lubbock, Sorsby has been receiving “monthly payments” from the school, On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos reported. Those payments have been put on pause as he takes a leave of absence from the program to address his addiction, with “no decisions made” on his future checks.

The 2026 college football season is still months away, but Texas Tech has no idea what will come of the situation. Sorsby allegedly placed over 10,000 bets, many on college football games, in the last four years, sometimes averaging over 20 per day. He wagered on many sports that are not permitted to NCAA athletes, but the most damning evidence is the discovery that he bet on Indiana and Cincinnati games while being a member of the team.

So far, there have been no reports of Sorsby intentionally impacting the outcome of games to cash in on his wagers.

The NCAA is currently investigating the situation, with a suspension certainly within the realm of possibility. Sorsby could be suspended for just a few games, but he could also be out for the entire year.
