Minnesota vs Oregon Prediction: Can the Ducks Start Looking the Part?

Oregon is fine.

It pulled off a thriller at Iowa, but the world, specifically, the College Football Playoff committee, is looking for more.

The Ducks moved up to eight in the latest rankings, but they need to be more impressive to get into a better CFP position. First, they have to get in, and with USC and at Washington to close, they can’t whiff this.

Minnesota got bowl eligible two weeks ago with an overtime win over Michigan State, but it hasn’t exactly been stellar, either, getting rocked 41-3 by Iowa before that.

However, it’s playing with house money now with a trip to Northwestern and date with Wisconsin to close.

Why Minnesota Will Win

It’s in there, but the Gophers have to play up to their abilities and be rock solid on the lines.

It all came out against Nebraska in a dominant performance, and it starts with one of the nation’s best pass rushes. It has to get to Oregon quarterback Dante Moore from the start, hold up against the run, and get off the field fast.

The offense doesn’t have the pop or firepower, but as long as it’s able to win the field position battle and avoid big mistakes, the team should be able to stay alive.

There aren’t any penalties – three or fewer in every FBS game but the loss to Cal – turnovers aren’t any sort of an issue, and the toughness is there to hold up against the Oregon physical style.

It’s not like the Ducks are going off on anyone good – Iowa is easily the best win of the season, and that took a minor miracle to pull off. However …

Why Oregon Will Win

Minnesota is absolutely awful on the road.

Traveling well has been one of the keys to the PJ Fleck era. Either the Gophers are a tough out, or they’re able to hold up and pull off the upsets with their tough, no-mistake style. This year is different.

Yeah, fine, there wasn’t any hope against Ohio State, but it didn’t even get off the bus in a 41-3 wipeout at Iowa, and it couldn’t stop screwing up in the wildly disappointing loss at Cal.

6-0 at home, 0-3 on the road, and now it’s dealing with an Oregon team that should beat the Gophers at their own game by winning third downs on both sides of the ball, controlling the narrative, and playing some nasty defense.

Minnesota vs Oregon Prediction, Betting Lines

Minnesota will hang around for most of the first half, but it won’t have anything to show for its decent performance. The points won’t be there, and the Ducks will take advantage with a few sharp drives to pull ahead.

Oregon will rock in the front-runner role. Minnesota doesn’t have the downfield pop to mount any sort of a comeback, even though the defense will hold up just enough to provide opportunities.

The Ducks will get in, get out, and it’s on to the USC showdown.
