How to Watch: Texas Tech Red Raiders at Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State has looked a lot better since the abysmal start to the season, even in the infuriating loss to Baylor. But there are visible cracks, and it may well be that Texas Tech is the wrong team to be playing with those cracks visible. Then again, as long as Mike Leach isn’t on their sideline the Cats have generally had Tech’s number, so no telling…

The Game

The Kansas State Wildcats (4-4, 3-2 Big 12) host the 13th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-1, 4-1 Big 12).

The Cats lead the all-time series 15-9, and hold an 8-game winning streak (and have won 12 of the last 13). You can be sure that aside from the run they’re on this season, Tech’s going to be motivated to end that streak.

Cameron Dickey and his 678 rushing yards were the scariest thing about the Tech offense a week ago, but it is worth noting that 263 of those yards game in one game (against Kansas). The problem facing K-State now is that while there was a suspicion Texas Tech would be relying on third-string quarterback Mitch Griffis, it turns out that starter Behren Morton will be back in the lineup. Morton was injured in that very same Kansas Game and has been out for two games; in the six games he played before getting hurt, he racked up 1500 yards on over 68% completion with 13 touchdowns against 3 picks.

And then there’s the Tech defense, which is fourth in the nation in points allowed, first against the run, and gives up fewer than 200 yards a game through the air.

It’s going to be a challenge.

At this moment, there are apparently still seats available from the ticket office from $55. On the secondary market you can’t get in for under $62, and the median price is $92.

Weather

It’s going to be chilly. As tailgating begins in earnest, temperatures will be in the low 40s, getting up to around 48° at kickoff and not really changing until the stadium empties. It should be partly cloudy through the day.

Odds

Tech opened as a 7-point favorite; DraftKings now has them at -7.5, with the over at 51.5, suggesting a 29-22 win for the Red Raiders. The money line is +240 for K-State, -298 for Tech. Oddsshark, which as we’ve noted has been wildly wrong about K-State all year, projects a 32-28 TCU win’s computer projection has Texas Tech winning 49-23. Ouch.
