Ole Miss football is coming off of one of its best seasons in school history, but it wasn’t without adversity. Just before the College Football Playoff, head coach Lane Kiffin made the decision to leave Oxford for the vacant LSU job, leaving Pete Golding in charge of the playoff run.
Golding and the Rebels handled themselves well, picking up wins over Tulane and Georgia before falling to Miami in a very close semifinal game. Now, Ole Miss is expected to finish near the top of the SEC once again after star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss was granted another year of eligibility.
After Ole Miss’ spring ball concluded, Chambliss finally opened up on the Kiffin fiasco and navigating the postseason without him, via On3 Sports.
“Yeah, it was definitely a weird process, him leaving right when we were getting a chance to play for everything we had worked for, and also just because me coming from Ferris State, our coach was there for the longest and he will retire there,” Chambliss said. “I guess I wasn’t used to something like that and used to that situation and how he handled it.”
Despite the awkwardness of the situation, Chambliss maintained that he has no hard feelings toward Kiffin for how everything unfolded.
“No hate or any less love for Coach Kiffin,” he said. “He gave me a great opportunity to come here and play football, and I’m truly grateful for that.”
Not only did Kiffin leave Ole Miss in the middle of a historic season, but he left to one of its chief rivals in the SEC. That has led to some bad blood from Ole Miss fans toward their former head coach, but Chambliss doesn’t share the same sentiment.
Bad blood or not, Kiffin will go head-to-head with Chambliss and his old Rebels team in Week 3 on Sept. 19 in Oxford. Kiffin will undoubtedly get all kinds of boos from that crowd, but he has assembled a great roster in Baton Rouge that should make for a heck of a game to kick off SEC play.
