SEC tiebreaker rules for 2025 season

The SEC will use six potential tie-breakers for the 2025 season in this order until the tie is broken:

Step 1: Head-to-head competition: This is the easiest tie-beaker. Did Team A beat Team B?

Step 2: Record vs. all common conference opponents.

Step 3: Record against highest (best) placed common conference opponent in the conference standings, and proceeding through the conference standings among tied teams.

Step 4: Cumulative conference winning percentages of all conference opponents among tied teams.

Step 5: Capped relative total scoring margin vs. all conference opponents among the tied teams.

Step 6: Random draw.

SEC contenders path to the championship game

Georgia (11-1, 7-1)

Georgia is in and has a chance to be the first back-to-back SEC champion outside of Alabama since 2000.

Alabama (9-2, 6-1)

Remaining schedule: at Auburn

The stakes are clear for Alabama — win and in for the SEC Championship Game next week.

Ole Miss (10-1, 6-1)

Remaining schedule: at Mississippi State

Ole Miss trounced Mississippi State 38-19 in the Egg Bowl. The Rebels are now alive for an SEC Championship Game berth after Texas A&M's loss, which further complicates Lane Kiffin's status should he decide to accept LSU's offer to become its head coach.

SEC teams still in CFP contention

Oklahoma (9-2, 5-2)

Remaining schedule: vs. LSU

The Sooners are projected as an SEC at-large as of now and needs to beat LSU to stay there.

Vanderbilt (9-2, 5-2)

Remaining schedule: at Tennessee

Vanderbilt, however, can stay in the CFP mix if they can win against Tennessee. It would make Vanderbilt 3-3 vs. ranked opponents (ranked at the time of the game) and would be Vanderbilt's only win against a currently ranked team.

Texas (9-3, 6-2)

Texas started the week at No. 16 in the CFP rankings, but the upset of Texas A&M has the Longhorns thinking they can make the climb all the way into at-large status. Texas will need some help, but the campaigning has already begun.
