Louisiana State University fired Brian Kelly as the head coach of its football program in the middle of the 2025-26 season following a frustrating loss at home to the Texas A&M Aggies. Last month, Kelly was reflective on his time in Baton Rouge and what led to his ousting.
“I would say there’s an easy, simple answer,” Kelly told USA Today. “And I didn’t win enough games. There’s a longer answer to why that didn’t happen — I’ll probably have to write a book about that. There’s always cause and effect, and the effect was I didn’t win enough games, period.
“I guess you do have to start with what is winning enough games? We were 34-14, 22-3 at home when I was fired. We had two 10-win seasons, won an SEC (West Division) championship, had the No. 1 offense in college football, a Heisman Trophy winner. When you look at what is winning and what keeps you employed, other people make those decisions. But it starts with what is defined as winning, and unfortunately, it wasn’t defined as enough winning leading into being fired.”
Kelly spoke with USA Today again on Tuesday, around six months since the end of his tenure as the head coach of the LSU Tigers, and revealed both that he is looking at getting back into coaching, and an interesting way that he’s going about it.
“Every day, I’m trying to do my due diligence using Claude and AI, asking questions to build some of those answers that I think can be helpful for me as I get in front of an athletic director.”
It’s late in the calendar for Kelly to get back into coaching in time for this upcoming season, but don’t be surprised if he’s back on the sidelines next year.
