LSU football had a nightmare 2025 season, but they made a massive change in an attempt to get back to the top of the SEC next season. After firing Brian Kelly midseason, the Tigers poached Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss to be their next head coach.
Kiffin is one of the most highly-regarded coaches in college football. He is seen as a great offensive mind and has been around the highest level of the sport for a very long time, which has led to some very high expectations for his first season in Baton Rouge.
However, Paul Finebaum isn’t quite buying Kiffin as one of the very best coaches in college football. He is giving the new LSU coach one more year to make some noise in the College Football Playoff before calling him overrated, via On3 Sports.
“The most intriguing name on whether he’s overrated or not is Lane Kiffin,” Finebaum said. “And I think a year from today, if you have me back and Lane Kiffin has not made the playoffs, I would put him at the top of the list, because it’s so hard to give him total credit for what happened last year. He did not do the most important thing on the Ole Miss schedule. He didn’t win those playoff games. He didn’t beat Georgia. Now, he beat Georgia two years ago at home. But I am somewhat underwhelmed by Lane Kiffin’s overall record against top 10 teams.”
Kiffin has never coached in the College Football Playoff as a head coach after he opted to leave Ole Miss before its postseason run last fall. The Rebels got two playoff wins under Pete Golding before falling to Miami (FL) in the semifinals. Kiffin was also famously fired as the Alabama offensive coordinator before the national title game in January 2017 against Clemson.
As a result, there will be a lot of pressure on Kiffin to have success early in his LSU tenure. Finebaum’s comments are only adding more fuel to the fire in that department’s it will be worth watching how quickly he is able to turn LSU around.
