Michigan football expects prized 2025 freshman Bryce Underwood to make big strides this fall. Even with Kyle Whittingham now leading the dual-threat quarterback as the newest Wolverines head coach. One key pass protector already is witnessing a changed Underwood.

Offensive lineman Blake Frazier has seen this new element out of Underwood while speaking via the Michigan Athletics Podcast Thursday.

“He seems a lot more composed a lot more comfortable with what’s going on,” Frazier began. “Not that he wasn’t last year, but obviously having a true freshman out there for game one is not something you see very often, and it’s for a reason.”

That’s still bold words and verbiage that brings new confidence for Michigan fans. But that’s not the only change Frazier has seen.

“He just seems more in control of the offense,” Frazier adds. “He understands the guys that he’s got out there with him, what they’re good at. And he just knows what to look for.”

Underwood is proving he can adjust on the fly with Whittingham installing the offense. The prized College Football Recruiting win arrived as one of the last Sherrone Moore recruits before his abrupt Michigan firing amid an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.

Whittingham coached versatile quarterbacks before at Utah. Notably Devon Dampier in 2025 who combined for 3,325 total yards. Underwood has shown a more composed side of him at Ann Arbor.

“It looks like he’s a lot more comfortable diagnosing defenses and knowing where he’s going to put the ball post snap,” Frazier said.

The lineman’s words paints the picture Underwood is becoming more cerebral ahead of the fall season.
