Kentucky Wildcats football entered into a new, exciting era this offseason when longtime head coach Mark Stoops was replaced with up-and-coming coach Will Stein. Stein immediately brought excitement to the program, and then set out to upgrade the roster, which he has undoubtedly done.

Over the past few months, Stein has proven he has chops in the recruiting game. He went into the transfer portal and landed some top talents. Then, he began recruiting in the 2027 class, and has already landed some highly rated players, including quarterback Jake Nawrot.

However, it's not just his recruiting that fans should be excited about. He came to Kentucky from the Oregon Ducks where he was the offensive coordinator, and a very good one. In fact, according to Coach Dan Casey, he's one of the nation's best.

On a recent episode of Crain and Cone, Casey ranked the five best play callers in college football, and Stein came in at number two.

I just think in terms of quarterback development, I don’t know if many people are doing it better than Will Stein right now, in terms of the guys that he’s had through his system the past few years at Oregon

Stein helped develop guys like Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel, and Dante Moore while he was with the Ducks, and turned them into top quarterbacks. He'll go to work on Kenny Minchey in Lexington.

Casey ranked only Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian ahead of Stein. It's an episode worth listening to.
