The Oklahoma Sooners’ defense has a big test in front of them this week when they go on the road to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama features one of the best quarterbacks in the country and a dynamic group of pass catchers. If there’s an area where OU has struggled this season, it’s defending the pass.
Trinidad Chambliss and Joey Aguilar were able to put together good passing days against the Oklahoma defense and the Sooners will face another tough matchup with Ty Simpson and Alabama. Let’s take a look at the key players on offense for the Crimson Tide.
1. Ty Simpson, QB
Ty Simpson doesn’t throw interceptions. He’s only thrown one this season. He’s completing 66.9% of his passes this season and averaging 273 yards and 2.3 touchdowns per game. He doesn’t run the ball well though, rushing for only 9.7 yards per game.
If Oklahoma can cover on the back end and force Simpson to hold onto the ball a bit longer than he’d like, the Sooners defensive front should be able to create pressure and affect the Tide’s passing game.
2. Germie Bernard, WR
Germie Bernard might be the most important player on the offense for the Crimson Tide aside from Simpson. Alabama uses him in a number of ways and he’s been effective. He will line up in the backfield, and they’ll throw him the ball in space, but he can win downfield as well. 46.8 percent of his targets come within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.
The key for Oklahoma is to fly to the football and wrap up after the catch. Bernard’s 10th in the SEC at 7.2 yards after the catch per reception.
3. Ryan Williams, WR
Ryan Williams may not be having as electric a season as he did as a true freshman, but he’s been steady in 2025, recording five catches in six of Alabama’s eight games. He’s a dynamic weapon in the passing game. Like Bernard, Williams can kill defenses after the catch if they don’t rally to the football and tackle well.
Oklahoma did a great job defending the Alabama passing attack last year and they’ll likely look to keep everything in front of them to limit big-play opportunities. Simpson, Bernard, and Williams can make even great defenses look bad with their ability.
