Ryan Day didn’t hold back on what it means to be a Buckeye with a strong message to future members of the Ohio State football team.

Ryan Day has been able to take what Urban Meyer did with the Ohio State Buckeyes and continue the success while even elevating the program in several ways. College football is ever-changing and the Buckeyes still remain at the forefront.

In the era of NIL, revenue sharing, and the transfer portal, Ohio State has done a great job of maneuvering each of them well. Getting high-quality players who fit in Columbus with the program is important as ever. Just because a player is a terrific talent, doesn’t mean they’re a fit for the Buckeyes.

Ryan Day has a clear and strong message for future Buckeyes

Day sat down with Josh Pate for an interview and it’s a good one. Ohio State’s head man made a strong statement on the kind of players the program needs.

“We have to make sure that we have guys in our program that understand the obligation of being a Buckeye, what it means to so many people,” Day said. “As long as we keep that culture intact and we make sure that everybody understands that when they walk in that building it’s not about them. It’s not about how much NIL money they make, it’s not about their career, it’s about being a Buckeye.

“Now if you do things the right way, we have a great blueprint on how that could work out for you. But make no mistake about it, when that Block O is on your chest, you’re doing this because of the people that come before, the people that care about Ohio State.”

It simply comes down to players buying into the program and everything that comes with it. Ohio State is arguably the biggest college football brand and the best players coming out have all bought into what it means to be a Buckeye. Whether it’s a freshman coming in from high school or a graduate transfer who spent multiple years in the SEC, Ohio State focuses on bringing in the players who fit the culture.

We’ve seen Ohio State miss on some big names over the years that fans wanted in the program badly. Oftentimes these players end up not being a fit for Ohio State, for whatever reason. It could be off-field concerns, personality, ego, work habits, and more.

Ohio State is always in the mix for a top recurring class every year, and they make big splashes in the transfer portal yearly to go along with it. Keeping a fine line of players who fit in the program will always be key for Ohio State to remain the level of football team it is.
