After Texas Longhorns HC Steve Sarkisian fired shots at Ole Miss, Jon Sumrall decided to pile on in a way only he could.
The Florida Gators have struck gold by landing head coach Jon Sumrall.
His success so far in Gainesville has been palpable. The 2027 recruiting class ranks in the top 10 with 14 recruits already committed. Recruits are talking about how the energy is different in Gainesville, and it’s been the biggest difference with recruiting.
It’s been a massive difference in how the program has been viewed, and he’s feeling comfortable starting to take shots.
Jon Sumrall joined Steve Sarkisian in talking about Ole Miss
In an interview with USA Today, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian talked about the transfer portal, and took a shot at Ole Miss.
“At Texas, we will only take 50% of a player’s academic credit hours,” Hayes quotes Sarkisian as saying. “You may be a semester from graduating, but you’re going all the way back to 50% if you play here and want a degree. But at Ole Miss, they can take you. All you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree. It’s like we’ve forgotten about academics, yet less than 5% of these guys will play in the NFL.”

Coming the day after Lane Kiffin’s interview with Vanity Fair came out, it certainly feels like a calculated release. Now, some of it could come from a strained relationship with Pete Golding allegedly using Sarkisian’s past alcohol issues to lure Arch Manning.
Sumrall has never been afraid to say anything about any subject, and he decided to get into the discussion.
Look, no matter what school it is, they let players get away with taking easy classes. Matt Leinart famously took ballroom dancing in his final semester at USC. Where Sumrall was brilliant is looping in the fact that the Gators are a top-10 public school in the nation.
Will this get much play in the media? Probably not, because, if nothing else, Sumrall is honest.
