When Lane Kiffin decided to leave Ole Miss for LSU football in 2025, it shocked the college football world. That is because Kiffin left Ole Miss ahead of the team’s appearance in the College Football Playoff. Now preparing for his first season at LSU, Kiffin is speaking out about his expectations.
Kiffin says he is thinking long-term about how he wants to build the LSU football program.
“It’ll show in Year 2, 3. It’s going to show that we have the same systems, we have all this stuff and we brought it here, and combined it with the branding of LSU and the ability to sign elite high school (players). That will show. It may not be next year, but this wasn’t a one-year decision,” Kiffin said, per On3.
LSU parted ways with former head coach Brian Kelly in the middle of the 2025 season. Kiffin was immediately seen as an obvious choice to replace Kelly. He ultimately got the job despite it creating tension within the Ole Miss community.
Since he left Ole Miss, Kiffin has faced relentless criticism about the decision. He famously said he wanted to keep coaching at Ole Miss through the CFP, but wasn’t allowed. Many national sports commentators felt Kiffin was to blame for that development.
The LSU head coach says leaving Ole Miss is like seeing a marriage end.
“It’s kind of like if you broke up with somebody. In this case, these are pretty big. They’re more like a divorce,” Kiffin said, per USA Today. “And, you leave by choice, but everything is going good on their end, they love it, and one person just leaves the relationship. There’s a lot of hatred. There’s a lot of villainizing, and that’s OK.”
LSU football starts their 2026 season on September 5 against Clemson. The Tigers play Ole Miss on September 19.
