Lane Kiffin Apologizes for Controversial Comments on Recruiting Challenges in Mississippi

In a wide-ranging interview with Vanity Fair, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said a lot of things he was proud of but one thing that he probably wasn't.

Kiffin said that one issue he faced while recruiting as head coach of Ole Miss was out-of-state Black parents being reluctant to see their sons move to Mississippi.

“‘Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi,'” Kiffin told Chris Smith in the interview. “That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’s diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that’s the real world.'”

But that remark clearly didn't sit well with fans who took it as a shot at both Ole Miss and the entire state of Mississippi.

So on Monday, Kiffin appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show and explained why he said what he said. He made it clear that it wasn't a shot at Mississippi and was simply a reality that he was dealing with. Kiffin asserted that there was no malice in his comments.

“I really apologize if anybody at Ole Miss or in Mississippi was offended by that,” he said. “In a four-hour interview, I was asked a lot of questions on a lot of things, and Ole Miss has been wonderful to me and to my family. I was asked questions about the differences in recruiting, and I said a narrative that we battled there from some out-of-state Black parents and grandparents was not wanting their kid to move to Mississippi. That’s a narrative that coaches have been fighting forever. It wasn’t calculated by bringing it up.”

Apology Accepted?

College football fans were divided on whether Kiffin's explanation was a suitable apology for what he said:

"Yet he didn't say anything like this for the 6 years he was at Ole Miss. And this time it only took him a couple of hours to say it. So there is no real apology there. Just a smirk," one user remarked.

"Honestly, he's right. People cherry pick lines or things out of context sound so much worse. Outrage cycles spin on," wrote another.

"He doesn’t apologize for the comment, but apologizes that people were offended by it. Classic narcissist," a third wrote.

If there was any doubt that LSU's September 19 game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was going to be must-see TV, this should pretty much seal it.

Ole Miss fans won't rest until Kiffin is so humiliated he's ashamed to step foot in their state again.
