Kyle Whittingham is trying to make a splash in his first year as the Michigan football head coach. And on the recruiting trail, he's starting to put together a heck of a class, even before official visit season starts later in the month.

In the 2027 class, he's working hard to get some of the top prospects from Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel's strong group of recruits, and top among them has long been four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell, who was targeted by the previous staff just as much as this one. And Whittingham seems to have improved upon the Wolverines' lot in that regard, with Burrell officially having made his commitment to the maize and blue on Wednesday.

The scouting report from Rivals' Allen Trieu:

Bigger, classic outside receiver but can also be effective in the slot. Has always had very good hand-eye coordination, ball skills, and ability to make contested catches. Smooth mover who can change directions fluidly and tracks and adjusts to the ball with ease. That shows up as a route runner also where he creates separation with his fluidity and change of direction. No verified speed. Comes across as having above average top end, but is not currently elite in terms of his long speed. Solid after the catch though. His athleticism translates to some wiggle and ability to make defenders miss. Savvy player who is well coached in high school and has played a lot of high level 7-on-7. Combination of polish and size gives him a chance to be an early contributor in college.

Here is the current 2027 recruiting class for the Wolverines using Rivals Industry Ranking:

  • Chicago (Ill.) Mount Carmel four-star WR Quentin Burrell (No. 85 overall)
  • Kalamazoo (Mich.) Loy Norrix four-star OT Jakari Lipsey (No. 104 overall)
  • Salt Lake City (Utah) West four-star QB Kamden Lopati (No. 119 overall)
  • Muskegon (Mich.) four-star EDGE Recarder Kitchen (No. 134 overall)
  • Indianapolis (Ind.) four-star EDGE Jayce Brewer (No. 361 overall)
  • Gatineau (Quebec) Brook Hill three-star IOL Sidney Rouleau (No. 424 overall)
  • Saline (Mich.) three-star IOL Louis Esposito (No. 601 overall)
  • Las Vegas (Nev.) Centennial three-star S Maxwell Miles (805 overall)

Burrell is the first wide receiver pledge in the class. He's ranked highest by ESPN which has him at No. 57 overall, as well as the 11th-best receiver and No. 6 player in the state of Illinois. Michigan is trending for his safety teammate, Tavares Harrington. Burrell is listed at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and chose Michigan over Notre Dame, Missouri, and Arizona State. He also had offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Indiana, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and others.
