May 13—Juwan Simpson, a former standout player at Austin High School and the University of Alabama, has been named the new head football coach at East Limestone.

The Limestone County Board of Education approved the hire Tuesday. Simpson replaces Will Johnson, who stepped down after two seasons and a 2-18 record.

Simpson was a standout linebacker at Austin from 1998-2001 and Alabama from 2002-06. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers in 2007 and later spent eight seasons with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

Since his retirement from playing, Simpson has had coaching stops with the Stampeders, Austin, James Clemens High, Westminster Christian Academy and, most recently, East Mississippi Community College.

Simpson was named the head coach at Hazel Green in December but now makes the move to East Limestone, where he will be the program's 12th head coach.
