Notre Dame football landed elite DT David Folorunsho on Friday, which is way more important than just grabbing a talented player.

Notre Dame football landed a massive commitment on Friday from elite 2027 Chicago (Ill.) St. Patrick defensive tackle David Folorunsho. The Chicago native chose the Fighting Irish over Miami and Texas Tech, amongst many others. This was a monumental win for head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive line coach Charlie Partridge, and the Irish staff.

Over the last several years, Notre Dame has struggled a good deal with attracting elite defensive tackles to South Bend. That is an improvement that we are starting to see under Coach Freeman. With Partridge also leading the defensive line recruiting operation, there is no reason to believe that there won’t be a lot more success in 2027 and in the future.

Folorunsho joins New Jersey star Aidan O’Neil to create a tremendous beginning to a potentially elite 2027 defensive line class. Notre Dame fans should now keep a close eye on the likes of Abraham Sesay, Jackson Vaughn, Brayden Parks, and Tyler Alexander, among others. The Irish staff has put themselves in a great spot with several key targets, and now it is time to close.

We have also seen Notre Dame struggle to close on Chicagoland talent in recent years. Folorunsho is hopefully the start of more success in that area. He could be a great example of opening the gates to more wins moving forward.

David Folorunsho’s recruiting background

When Notre Dame first offered Folorunsho, he was considered to be a three-star by both Rivals and 247Sports. He is now considered to be a top-100 overall player by both. On Rivals’ rankings, Folorunsho is currently rated a four-star, the No. 9 overall player, No. 2 defensive lineman, and No. 1 player from the state of Illinois.

As those rankings have risen, so has the list of offers for the Chicago native. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Oregon, Michigan, LSU, Florida, Penn State, Tennessee, Miami, Auburn, Indiana, Nebraska, Missouri, Texas Tech, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas State, Iowa, UNC, Kentucky, Virginia, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Cal, and Purdue, among others.

At 6-4 and 285 pounds, Folorunsho is an impressive athlete who has been used up and down the line of scrimmage from various alignments for St. Patrick. As a junior, the talented defender recorded 55 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and five sacks. As Folorunsho continues to fill out his frame and develop, he has the potential to become an even more dominant football player and a continued riser in the 2027 recruiting class across all platforms.
