As we slowly begin to enter the month of June, the Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day are looking to continue their success on the recruitment trail this offseason.
The Buckeyes’ 2027 recruiting class is already off to a hot start, as Day and company have managed to land 11 commits in the class, with two of the prospects being five-star talents in EDGE DJ Jacobs and wide receiver Jamier Brown. However, the prestigious program recently received some unfortunate news regarding one of the top recruits in the class.
Earlier this week, Edmunds told On3 Sports’ Greg Biggins about how he believes it’s “smart” to protect himself in the recruitment process despite being committed to the Buckeyes.
“I love Ohio State and can definitely still see myself there,” Edmunds told On3 Sports. “I do think it’s smart to protect myself though and stay out in front of this. I think you always want to feel valued and like you’re a priority still and that’s where I’m at.”
In addition to his comments about his future, Edmunds told Biggins that multiple schools have reached out to him over the past couple of weeks, including a fellow Big Ten Conference member, the UCLA Bruins. With the young Ohio State commit residing an hour away from UCLA in Huntington Beach, it’s clear that the Bruins could make a late run for him this summer.
Still, Edmunds reiterated that he “loves” Ohio State as a potential college option, leaving the door open for him to remain committed to the Buckeyes.
“Like I said, I still love Ohio State as an option for me," Edmunds stated. "There’s a reason why I committed so early in the first place. At the same time, I have to do what’s best for me and protect myself here, so that’s where things are at right now.”
As one of the first prospects in Day’s 2027 recruiting class, Edmunds has been viewed as a prized possession for the program. However, after announcing his commitment to Ohio State back in 2024, the California native gradually slipped down the multiple recruiting industry rankings, as he is currently the No. 18 quarterback in the upcoming class, according to 247Sports’ Composite. And with reports coming out that Day has been pushing to add another quarterback in the 2027 class, it seems as if Edmunds' mentality has begun to shift over the past couple of months.
Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, both four-star quarterback targets, Trae Taylor and Wonderful Monds IV, have recently committed elsewhere. This now leaves Day and the program in an interesting spot as we enter the summer recruitment period.
Luckily for Ohio State, Edmunds will take a trip to Columbus next month for an official visit, making it an important weekend for the Buckeyes.
