With former Utah football head coach Kyle Whittingham leaving for the Michigan Wolverines, the Utes are now coached by Morgan Scalley, who has been the defensive coordinator for the program since 2016. As Whittingham is hiring coaches from the Utah football team to Michigan, Scalley speaks on the departure of the now-Wolverines coach.

Speaking in an interview with On3 Sports, Scalley was asked if there was personal frustration with Whittingham taking the job at Michigan, or if he knew it could have been an option.

“Did I know he would go to Michigan? No. Did I feel like he could go coach somewhere? One hundred percent. He’s a good coach. And if I’m in Kyle’s shoes, he’s got to do what he feels is best for Michigan,” Scalley said.

“So, of course, he’s going to lean on contacts,” Scalley continued. “He’s going to lean on what he knows. He knew our players, he knew our coaches, and he knows the recruiting environment here in Utah.”

As Scalley spoke of not being shocked by Whittingham taking another job, though not expecting Michigan, he still credits the coach for everything he’s done for the program and himself.

“All I know is I love Kyle Whittingham,” Scalley said. “That guy helped me believe in myself as a defensive football player. I was an offensive guy that he ended up switching to defense, and he gave me opportunity after opportunity along the way — not only as a graduate assistant, but as an assistant coach, special teams coordinator, and defensive coordinator.

“He believed in me, and I have nothing but respect and love for that man. If there’s any misconception that Morgan Scalley had anything to do with pushing him out, there’s no way. I was 100 percent loyal to him and have nothing but respect and love for him,” Scalley continued.

The Scalley era of the Utah Utes starts this upcoming season as the team looks to further improve after finishing with a 10-2 record, 7-2 in conference play, with the first game of the 2026 season coming against Idaho on Sept. 3.
