Ohio State football grabbed a win they needed over the weekend with a blue-chip player who brings an NFL bloodline. Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson is putting together a strong unit this cycle.
Ohio State football defensive line coach Larry Johnson has been with the program since 2014 and there’s been plenty of talk around the potential of him stepping away from the game soon. Johnson, in his mid 70s, is still getting it done at a high level in Columbus.
Getting No. 1 2027 EDGE DJ Jacobs was a big statement by Johnson and Ohio State for their class. Now, Ohio State has found Jacobs’ running mate for the current recruiting class.
Ohio State’s latest addition shows Larry Johnson still has his fastball
Johnson is still having high success on the recruiting trail and the Buckeyes are coming out of the weekend with a new pass rusher for the future. Ohio State landed a commitment from four-star St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) EDGE Wyatt Smith on Sunday. Smith picked the Buckeyes over Missouri and Indiana most notably.
Ohio State has had the momentum to land Smith since it offered him back in early March. He’ll take his official visit to Columbus on June 5, and it’s a great sign for the Buckeyes that they were able to get him verbally committed before it happens. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound pass rusher is the No. 78 player nationally and No. 11 EDGE, per 247 Sports Composite.
Smith is the son of former NFL standout Justin Smith, who played 14 seasons in the league between the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers. Smith’s father had six Pro Bowl nods and was a two-time first-team All-Pro in the NFL.
Ohio State now has its two pass rushers for the 2027 group and will likely look to add another. The Buckeyes will have to keep other teams off of Jacobs, it’s their most important storyline to watch until he actually signs. But as of right now, it’s a strong duo that Johnson has been able to get committed.
The Buckeyes will lose both Kenyatta Jackson and Beau Atkinson after the 2026 season. Continuing to bring in quality talent from high school is a must for the Buckeyes at the premium positions. They’re doing just that off the EDGE.
