Michigan State is officially the first Big Ten school — and, Spartan fans hope, the last — to extend an offer to 2027 offensive tackle RJ Clem, a big-bodied prospect who could eventually anchor the foundation of an offensive line.

Logansport High School standout Clem posted on social media early Monday afternoon that he had a strong conversation with Spartans offensive line coach Nick Tabacca. After also hosting Michigan State coaches for a visit last week, Clem was excited to announce his first Big Ten offer.

Clem already possesses the kind of frame that immediately grabs attention. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 265 pounds, he is a towering young lineman who is not shy about imposing his will with physicality, quick feet, and a strong football IQ. While there is still room for him to continue developing both his size and strength, Clem is already progressing very well for his age and shows plenty of upside as a long-term tackle prospect.

Currently, neither 247Sports nor On3 has assigned Clem a composite or finalized recruiting rating, but the interest surrounding him is already beginning to build.

Before Michigan State extended its offer, Clem had reportedly already picked up offers from several other programs. According to 247Sports, that list includes Yale, Wake Forest, Central Michigan, Liberty, New Mexico, Western Michigan, Harvard, Princeton, and Penn. Clearly, there is no shortage of interest in the Indiana native.

And it makes perfect sense.

In today’s game, edge rushers are faster, stronger, smarter, and more explosive than they were even a decade ago. Defensive players are practically being engineered in labs to wreak havoc on quarterbacks and disrupt offenses at every level. Because of that, having a strong offensive line that can work together cohesively to keep those defenders in check has become one of the biggest keys to winning football games.

That importance is amplified even further in a conference like the Big Ten, where Michigan State will consistently battle some of the top defensive talent and recruits in the country. The Big Ten has quickly become one of the most dominant conferences in college football, and recent national success across the league has only strengthened its recruiting pull against the SEC.

For the Spartans, building a physical and reliable offensive line is no longer optional — it is essential.

Michigan State’s struggles in the trenches last season were a major reason for the team’s inconsistency and lack of success. Protection issues and an inability to consistently establish control at the line of scrimmage hurt the offense throughout the year.

Now, however, there appears to be a renewed emphasis on fixing that identity.

Alongside Tabacca, the Spartans are clearly prioritizing offensive line development and toughness moving forward. The expectation is that the offensive line becomes the bread and butter of the program — the unit that sets the tone for the entire team. Simply put, Michigan State will likely go as far as that group can take it over the next several seasons.

That is what makes a prospect like Clem so intriguing for the future.

If he eventually chooses Michigan State, Clem would place himself in a strong position to develop into a high-level tackle at a major program in one of college football’s premier conferences. For players with NFL aspirations, that path matters.

Now, Spartans fans will wait for the next step: an official visit and, perhaps down the line, a commitment letter.
