BATON ROUGE – LSU football has one more than one quarterback on roster that has started multiple games in the Southeastern Conference.
Sophomore Michael Van Buren has started eight games in his young collegiate career, all of those coming during his freshman season at Mississippi State in 2024. He led the Bulldogs to one win out of those eight starts over UMass while losing all of the SEC games his started.
Van Buren transferred to LSU over the offseason and has appeared in three games in 2025, most recently coming in for starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier at Alabama Nov. 8. The Tigers lost to the Crimson Tide, 20-9.

He managed 53 yards of offense in 21 minutes of play, going 5 of 11 for 52 yards passing and ran six times for 1 yard.
Former LSU head football coach Brian Kell and former offensive coordinator Joe Sloan brought Van Buren in to the program with ideation of him being the successor to Nussmeier as this is his final season in Baton Rouge.
Van Buren brings an added dimension to the Tigers’ offense as he is a dual-threat quarterback that can affect the game with both his arm and legs, a contrast to how the offense operates with Nussmeier in the game.
The former three-star high school prospect form Bowie, Maryland played in the 2024 Under Armour All-American Game. Van Buren led St. Frances Academy to the 2022 high school national championship game against IMG Academy. St. Frances was ranked in the top 10 two years in a row with Van Buren at quarterback, getting as high as No. 2 in 2022.
